Surface Water Pumps

Work out the flow you need and the total head, meaning the height from the water source to the highest outlet or tank plus friction losses along the pipe. Surface pumps can only draw water up a limited height, so also check the maximum suction lift in the specifications.

Install it as close to the water source as possible, level on a firm base and sheltered from rain and direct sun, with a foot valve and strainer on the suction pipe. Keep suction joints airtight, because air leaks stop the pump from priming.

Yes: fitted with a pressure tank or pressure switch, it starts when a tap opens. Check the pump's maximum pressure and flow against the number of taps and floors it must serve.

Note the water source, the height and distance to the tank or outlets, the pipe size, and whether electricity is available at the pump position.
